You open from the cutoff and the button raises you back.
The action is on you, and your hand is KJs — a hand you thought was worth raising thirty seconds ago. Nothing about it has changed since then. What changed is that somebody disagreed.
Most people do not fold instantly here. They freeze.
And the thing they freeze on is not “is this hand strong” but “is this hand strong enough for a 3-bet pot” — a different question, and one nobody ever taught them to answer. So everyone falls back on a set of rules they worked out for themselves: call with the monsters, call with pocket pairs (there might be a set in there), never fold an ace, fold the rest.
The trouble with those rules is not that they are loose or tight. It is that the hands they keep are not necessarily the right ones — the section on folding puts them side by side with the hands that should actually continue, and the gap is wider than you would guess. And the hands they throw away are the number this post is about.
How often you press that button is your fold to 3-bet.
The 3-bet post mentioned it once, from the other side of the table: when your opponent folds to 3-bets more than 70% of the time, re-raising him with 72o shows a profit. This post swaps seats — now you are the one being counted.
And when this number is high, nerve usually has nothing to do with it. It is high because you are opening too wide, and the next section works that out in a table.
What follows, in order: what the statistic actually counts, where the 65% and 70% lines come from, what to do on the hands you do not fold, what call 3-bet adds on top, and how large a sample it takes before any of it counts. Read the 3-bet post first if you have not — the arithmetic from there gets reused here.
What It Counts: The Hands You Opened Too Many Of
In one sentence: you raised preflop, somebody re-raised behind you, and you folded.
The weight is on “you raised” — this number only covers hands where you fired first and got fired back at. Two spots that look very similar are not in it:
- You called into the pot and somebody 3-bet: not counted. That is the world after a cold call
- You were in the big blind, somebody attacked your blind and you folded: not counted. That is a different number (fold BB to steal, target 55% or below)
The other way round, somebody squeezing your open does count — a call is not a raise, and a squeeze is statistically a 3-bet. (There is one small superset, technically: you 3-bet and get 4-bet lands in here too, because the condition is the raise-then-re-raise structure. 4-bet pots are a small enough share that it does not change how you read the number.)
Why It Runs High: The Problem Happened at the Open
Start with one set of numbers. It is the backbone of this whole post.
RushCraft’s practice mode has these default opening ranges by seat (the preflop range charts draw them out square by square):

Then the default continuing range once you have been 3-bet. It comes in two pieces, and the 4-bet piece does not vary by seat:
4-bet: QQ+, AKs, AKo, A5s (2.9% of all starting hands)
The calling piece splits four ways by where you opened:

Now multiply the two together — play those two tables and what is your fold to 3-bet? (The continuing range has to be intersected with your opening range first: from UTG you never hold A5s in the first place.)

Weighted roughly by how often each seat opens, that averages around 85%. The line is 65%.
The thing to look at in that table is not which cell is biggest. It is the relationship between the leftmost column and the rightmost one: the continuing range barely moves (4.1% to 5.6%), while the opening range runs from 11.2% all the way to 46.9%. Every bit of the spread in the fold column comes from the opening column.
So:
- The UTG row, at 64%, is the only one inside the line — and not because it plays braver, but because it opens tight enough
- The BTN row is at 88%. For those extra 35 percentage points of hands, there is not one plan for what happens when somebody raises back
That is why the line at the top of this post is “not your nerve”. Telling a player whose fold to 3-bet is 85% to “call a bit more” achieves nothing — his real problem happened thirty seconds earlier, at the moment he decided to open J7s without ever asking what he would do if it came back at him.
The 3-bet post put it this way when it discussed the fix for a number that is too high: the hands you 3-bet need a next move against a 4-bet. This is the mirror image — the hands you open need a next move against a 3-bet. At least one of three: able to 4-bet, able to call and play the hand after the flop, or good reason to think he will not 3-bet you. With none of the three, the hand was never an open.
(To be clear about what those two range tables are: a first-pass approximation from practice mode, a value skeleton, not a complete “play this and you are done” strategy. What the table proves is not that the skeleton is wrong. It is that the skeleton is a long way from the line, and that distance can only be filled in with live reads — the next section is where the line comes from, and the section on the three-way choice is how you fill it.)
65% and 70%: Both Lines Come From His Arithmetic
RushCraft’s rule for this number:
65% or below. Past 65% is a warning; past 70% it is flagged as a serious leak. Minimum sample: 30 opportunities.
70% is not a feeling. It is the same figure the 3-bet post worked out, seen from the other chair. Once more:
He is in the big blind facing your 2.5bb open from the cutoff, and he 3-bets to 10bb.
- He puts in an extra 9bb (the 1bb of his big blind was already on the table)
- The pot he is attacking is 2.5 + 1 + 0.5 = 4bb
- Break-even fold equity = 9 ÷ (9 + 4) ≈ 69%

So the line means something very concrete: once your fold rate passes 69%, he profits from 3-betting you with anything. 72o included. He does not need to look at his cards and he does not need to make a judgement. It stops being a decision and becomes a button.
65% is the buffer left below that 69%, and the 70% line is “you are already sending money for free”. The two lines are five percentage points apart — wider than cold call’s single point, and still narrower than you would think: in the table above, four of the five positions skip over the entire buffer zone.
Running it backwards is more useful still: to stop his pure bluffs from printing, you have to continue with roughly a third of your opening range.

The button row is off by nearly a factor of three. Opening 46.9% on the button is not a cheap way to enjoy your position — it is a cheque, and it demands that you take 15% of all starting hands into a 3-bet. If you cannot cover it, do not open that wide. Both answers are correct; pick one.
There is no floor on this line, but “too low” is still an illness
Like cold call, this number has only a ceiling on its diagnostic card. However far below it you go, nothing is flagged.
But the absence of a floor here does not mean the same thing it means for cold call. With cold call it is the action itself that is not worth a frequency, and zero is perfectly healthy. Fold to 3-bet drifting downward has a specific cost — you are dragging a pile of hands that cannot stand the heat into 4-bet-sized pots, and then playing a weak range against his strong one on every street. The AI coach’s explanation library has an entry for exactly this, and the healthy interval it gives is 55% to 65%, written in both directions.
The card has no floor while the coach text covers both sides, and I read that as follows: in real games almost nobody runs low. Someone who calls 3-bets with K9o has a problem that VPIP picked up long ago. This line only needs to defend one direction.
The One Defence for a High Number: His 3-Bet Frequency
The whole of the previous section rests on one assumption: he is bluffing.
That 69% is the threshold at which a pure bluff becomes automatically profitable. If the man across from you 3-bets 3% of the time — that is, he only ever does it with QQ+ and AK — then folding 85% is not merely acceptable, it costs you nothing at all. The hands you threw away were never beating the range he turns over.
This makes fold to 3-bet the most opponent-dependent number in the series. A high VPIP is your problem and a low ATS is your problem, but whether an 80% fold rate is a problem depends on who is doing the 3-betting.

(That 13% is not picked at random: it is one of the thresholds at which RushCraft classifies somebody as a maniac outright.)
This defence has two limits, and both need saying.
First, your own total is the answer for an average opponent. The diagnostic card counts every hand on which you faced a 3-bet, tight opponents and wild ones mixed together. You cannot explain away an 85% with “the people I run into are all nits” — not unless you actually go and look at those hands, and the first button the card offers when it flags you is the one that pulls every last one of them up.
Second, this needs a sample of him. And as the section on sample size covers, this is the slowest-accumulating statistic in the series; your confidence in his 3-bet number is usually lower than you assume.
The Three-Way Choice: Call, 4-Bet, Fold
“Call more” is not the fix for this number. The fix is turning that moment back from a two-way choice into a three-way one — which is exactly how RushCraft’s fold-to-3-bet drill is built: you open, you face a 3-bet, and you choose between folding, calling and 4-betting, judged against the 4-bet range first, so a hand appearing in both tables is scored as a 4-bet.
4-bet: QQ+, AKs, AKo, A5s
Note A5s, the one hand in that range that is not there on merit. 4-bets need bluffs for precisely the same reason 3-bets do — a 4-bet range of nothing but QQ+ lets your opponent stack off comfortably with kings every single time, while your aces never make more than the 3-bet.
Why A5s and not 87s: the ace in your hand directly removes combinations of AA and AK from him (the hardest part of his 3-betting range), and A5s that gets called can still make straights and flushes. 87s does neither — it blocks nothing, and it has no particularly good future once called.
Calling: position sets the width
The four rows of the calling table above are not in a random order: BTN is widest at 2.7%, SB narrowest at 1.2%, more than double the difference between them.
The reason is the same as with cold calling, with the roles reversed: when you open on the button and a blind 3-bets, you have position after the flop, so hands like AQo and KQs can continue, because you speak last on all three streets. Open from the small blind, get 3-bet by the big blind, and you speak first on every street with no pot-odds compensation — a small-blind open facing a 3-bet should nearly always collapse into 4-bet or fold.
What position decides is not how much you call. It is whether you are allowed to call with hands that are not strong enough. That sentence has come up three times in this series now, because it keeps being true.
Folding: the hands those homemade rules keep
Back to the rules at the top — call every pocket pair, never fold an ace. Line them up against the calling table and the gap is large.
Rule one: “any pocket pair can go set-mining”. The default calling range stops at TT. Not one of 22 through 99 is in it.
Set-mining is a business that runs on implied odds: you hit about one time in eight, so the time you hit has to be worth enough. A 3-bet pot cuts most of that away (100bb stacks, a 2.5bb open):

You pay 1.5 times as much and the amount you can win back drops to a third. A one-in-eight business stops being worth it somewhere around a 12x price (the full arithmetic is in how to work out pot odds).
And missing hurts more. After you call, the pot is already around 20bb and you have 90bb behind — two bets from him take half your stack. What you thought you were buying was a quiet look at three cards with a cheap exit; what you actually bought is a decision on the flop the moment he bets.
(The same hand class is in the cold-calling range as 22-JJ, all of them. That is not a contradiction: facing a single open, you are buying the 32x row. Change the size of the pot and the same 55 gets a different answer.)
Rule two: “never fold an ace”. This one is wrong more directly, because his 3-betting range is unusually rich in aces.
Look at a standard 3-bet range — QQ+, AK, AQs, AJs, and even the bluff is A5s (the preflop range charts have five of them drawn out). That is a range with a very high concentration of aces, and the comfort your own ace gives you is what walks you down the road where you are most easily dominated: you hold A9s, the flop comes ace-high, you have top pair — and then you pay him off across three streets with his AQ and AK.
For the same reason, AJo, KQo and ATo — big, offsuit, unpaired — should also go. When they hit top pair you cannot tell whether you are ahead or outkicked, and when they miss there is nothing to fall back on. This class of hand is where the most money is lost against 3-bets, and it loses it slowly, a little at a time.
So what stays? The default calling table points the direction: suited high cards like AQs, AJs and KQs. Big enough kickers when they make top pair, and flushes and straights behind them when they do not — two ways to win instead of one.
Which is what is really wrong with those homemade rules: they sort hands by how strong the hand looks, and this spot needs them sorted by whether the hand has a second way to win. 55 and A9o both make the cut under the first sort. Neither makes it under the second.
Call 3-Bet: What You Do Instead of Folding
When you do not fold, you do one of two things: call, or 4-bet. Fold to 3-bet only tells you how often you decline to choose. It says nothing about how you split the rest — and those splits play very differently.
The same 60% fold to 3-bet can be:
- 35% calling + 5% 4-betting: you almost never fight back, so opponents can 3-bet you very wide, since all you do is call
- 25% calling + 15% 4-betting: every 3-bet against you has to come with a plan for being 4-bet
One number, two completely different players. The statistic that separates them is call 3-bet (how often you call when facing two raises).
Its place in RushCraft is different from fold to 3-bet’s: it appears in the opponent profile window as Call 3B, with no target band and no diagnostic card. That design is right — its healthy value depends entirely on how the other two pieces divide, and a call 3-bet on its own decides nothing.
Its real use is reading opponents, and it has to be read alongside fold to 3-bet:

The middle row is both the most common and the most profitable — bluffing someone who does not fold is a pure loss, a point that also comes up with cold calling, where it is another facet of the same opponent.
One technical detail to keep in mind when comparing them: call 3-bet’s denominator is not quite fold to 3-bet’s (the former is “facing two raises”, which includes hands where you were not the opener; the latter requires that you raised). The two percentages will not add tidily to 100. Do not force them into a pie chart.
Sample Size: The Lowest Threshold Is Also the Slowest Number
RushCraft’s rule: under 30 opportunities, the card simply answers “not enough data”.
30 is the lowest threshold in the series — cold call wants 50, and 3-bet’s trend diagnosis wants 1,000 hands. It looks like the easiest one to fill.
It is the opposite. Work out how the chances accumulate: first you have to open (roughly one hand in five), then somebody has to 3-bet you (roughly one open in eight to ten). Multiply them and you get about 2 to 3 opportunities per 100 hands — an order of magnitude slower than cold call, more than ten times slower than 3-bet.
So 30 opportunities is about 1,300 hands. And here is the resolution those 30 buy you (assuming a true fold rate of 65%):

(Normal approximation of the 95% interval; the orders of magnitude are right.)
That first interval, 48% to 82%, swallows both the 65% and the 70% lines whole. Which is to say that at the moment the threshold is met, you cannot tell whether you are healthy, warned or seriously leaking.
So why set the threshold at 30? For the same reason cold call sets its own: the illness this number is hunting is not “66 or 64”, it is the 85% player from the second section. An 85% sits well outside the interval at 30 opportunities, plain as day, and how wide the interval is makes no difference to that conclusion.
That third row, “13,000 hands”, says something else worth hearing: “is my fold to 3-bet 68 or 63” is a question most players will never have the sample to answer. Do not chase the decimal. Go back to the table in the second section — how many squares wide you open is knowable without playing a single hand.
The right way to use it, then, is the same as everywhere else: bracket, do not tune.
- 30 to 100 opportunities: confirm you are not one of the 80% players. An eight in front is a conclusion already; no more data required
- A few hundred: put yourself in the normal or high bracket, then go back and check which position you have been opening too wide from
- Past ten thousand hands: only now does fine-tuning apply, and honestly by then what is worth looking at is call 3-bet
When the card flags you as high it gives you two buttons: one pulls up every hand you folded to a 3-bet, the other opens practice mode. Press the first one — ten hands in you will notice they cluster in one or two positions, and that is the thing to fix.
If You Play Rush & Cash
On fast-fold tables, folding moves you to a new table, and that affects this number more directly than any other statistic, because the whole of that one defence stops being available.
“His 3-bet is only 3%, so folding is correct” is a sentence that requires a read on that person, and on a fast-fold table you never play ten hands against the same one. A condition you cannot verify is a condition you cannot assume, so on fast-fold tables all you have is the default answer: 65%. Which actually simplifies things — there are no excuses left. If your fold rate is high, it is high.
There is an effect running the other way that is worth knowing: you cannot read opponents on a fast-fold table, but they cannot read you either. Nobody is building a profile, so “he noticed I fold to every 3-bet and started targeting me” does not happen — the punishment for over-folding goes from being targeted back to simply earning less every time. It turns from acute into chronic. The total is the same.
As for the sample, this is the one piece of good news: at 2 to 3 opportunities per 100 hands, fast-fold speed is the most practical way to get to a meaningful number. Export your hand history from PokerCraft first (six steps, see downloading your Natural8 hand history); import it into RushCraft and your fold rate, its distance from the target band and which positions are producing it are already computed.
Fold to 3-bet comes down to one sentence: once the hands you opened get questioned, how often you simply pay up and leave.
- What it counts: only hands where you fired first and got fired back at. Calling into the pot and then facing a 3-bet is not in it, and neither is folding your big blind to a steal
- Where the spread comes from: play the default ranges and UTG is 64% while BTN is 88% — the entire spread comes from the opening range. The first fix is not calling more, it is that the hands you open need a next move
- Where the line comes from: 69% is the point at which his pure bluffs print. Past it he profits with 72o
- The one third: to make his bluffs unprofitable you have to continue with a third of your opening range. Open 46.9% on the button and that is 15% of all starting hands
- Who is doing the raising: against an opponent who 3-bets 3%, folding 85% costs nothing. This is the number’s only defence, and it needs a sample of him
- Hand type over hand strength: pocket pairs get 12x implied odds in a 3-bet pot instead of 32x, and hands with an ace run straight into the part of his range richest in aces. What stays is AQs, AJs, KQs — hands with a second way to win
- What you do instead of folding: whether the rest is calls or 4-bets decides whether he can 3-bet you for free
- The sample: 2 to 3 opportunities per 100 hands, and at 30 the interval spans both lines. Bracket, do not tune
Next time you open and it comes back at you, ask one question before you fold: when I decided to open this hand thirty seconds ago, did I think about this exact moment?
